When you look at the Alti carpet (woven 500 years b.c.), you see the first example of a well-balanced design, with the simple, primitive uniqueness that one finds in pottery and which is far in advance of the cave dwellers' wall scratchings Through the ages, in the Middle and Far East, each centre kept to its own designs, proud of its traditions; but, of course, due to marriages, the camel trains, wars and the change of power, fine weavers and artists were moved to new capitals.

Yet up to the eighteenth century, through all this turmoil, the designs seem to have survived.
